QUESTION: How to choose a career path as a student?

If you are a student and you are confused about your study area or it is hard for you to decide a career path then congratulations, you are not alone. Almost every student is feeling the same. It is the beginning of tough time that every successful person you see today has been through. You are not any special. It is a panic for everyone but the level of intensity vary from person to person.

I will use students and people interchangeably.

Some people get good mentor-ship while some have got a good luck which reduces their pain in some way. But many students have to figure out their way by own. Sounds disheartening, isn’t it? It’s OK. Get over it.

I was sort of the latter kind of student but luckily at the end of my degree I meet with my most respected mentors. Whenever I have to make a choice, I surely contact them and request them for their advice. It does not mean that I follow 100% of the advice all the time but it makes like more than 50% of my decision.

Here, I am going to share my own personal experience that I had throughout my graduation. When I was a student, I rarely asked people what should I do or which areas of computer science have larger scope. Instead I tried to at least get familiar with as many branches of computer science as I could. I learned basics of web engineering, apps development, desktop development, Networking, Game development, software architecture, OS, Databases and algorithms etc. The question is how I did all this? Well, every student who consider their degree as a serious business do better than me. I am average. Not the brightest, not the most gifted human…

Never make a choice until you know all the possible choices you have. [Advice]

I am glade that I got involved in many things. When I was learning android development, I never thought that one day I will need to make android plugins for unity.
When I was learning web, I never thought that I will get a remote internship as a JavaScript developer in the Silicon Valley of US.

Now as a fresh graduate I have enough options to choose from for the rest of my career because I never limited myself to one specific thing. Computer Science and other areas related to computer are evolving with super-fast speed. No body guarantees the existence of things in future which exist today. Again, never choose when you do not to have.

But frequently switching among things or doing things in parallel is arguably a bad idea but who cares. It is sort of personal taste. Whether you embrace the power of doing one thing or you just go and do it all. Obviously you can shift from many to one at any time you want. After all the end goal is self-satisfaction and without self-satisfaction, nobody can reach nowhere. So, it’s up to you.

In conclusion, I would recommend you to stop asking and start working. When you ask someone for advice, you get a story in response and when you work by yourself, you get experience in return. And I think experience is a better choice than a story. So, go and get your hands dirty with many colors and see which colors suit you the best. Choose few and wash the rest or keep all of them. Again, it is you who have to decide. So role up your sleeves and create your story the way you want, the way you like.

  2. Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions you will make in life. It's about so much more than deciding what you will do to make a living. Some parents force their child in choosing a particular career. They are not aware that if they will force their child then it will not lead to success of their child. A child should choose the carrier as per their choice, then only they will achieve a success.
